How the Domain Name System Works

What is a Domain Name?

A uniform resource locator (URL) contains the electronic path information to a specific web site. URL's generally take the form http://www.DomainName.com. The URL is used by web browsers to locate documents and resources on the World-Wide-Web.

HTTP stands for Hyper Text Transport Protocol, www refers to the World-Wide-Web, and the domain name is the personalized component of the URL. This is the name that identifies a specific company or individual. The domain name is often referred to as a web address.

The domain name suffix (.com, for example) refers to the type of organization that owns the domain name. There are currently numerous alternative suffixes - and more are being adopted or proposed.

The ".com" suffix is the most common and is used for individuals or businesses engaged in commercial activity. Other common suffixes include ".net," ".org", ".edu" (reserved for use by educational institutions and affiliates), and".gov" (reserved for government agencies).

Why do I Need a Domain Name?

A domain name is an internationally recognized address and is your connection to the world. It uniquely identifies you and allows other people or businesses to find you. A domain name is also a branding mechanism for your products or services. Obviously it helps to have a memorable and easy to remember name - and preferably one that helps to define or reinforce your image. Once a domain name is secured, it can be pointed to a site of your choosing. The important thing to remember is that you do not have to have a site up and running to secure a domain name. At the rate domain names are being snapped up, it is generally wise to register in advance of your need.

Can I Register Multiple Names and Point Them All to a Single Web Site?

Absolutely. This is one of the secrets of the most successful web sites. In fact, many large companies will register or lease generic domain names that generate lots of traffic and point them to their web sites. Microsoft and other astute online marketers have dozens of names that point to their primary web sites.
